A Power App solution to replace and improve on ageing incident management software.
Akita has developed an incident management Power Apps solution for a leading highways maintenance company as a solution to outdated incident management software.
The company maintains key sections of the road network in London and across the wider UK. It is tasked with taking care of road traffic incidents, obstacles on the highway and general maintenance of routes.
The company achieves this by monitoring an expansive camera network. As and when an issue is identified, it is logged for action. To ensure road safety, the smooth running of traffic and that time is not wasted, reports need to be accurate. Operatives also have to be sure that tasks are being completed.
While the company was using legacy incident management software to achieve this, it was recognised that this solution had fallen behind the times. Scheduled depreciation of backend technology eventually forced a change.
Given the importance of the task at hand, a new solution was required quickly. As time was at a premium, it also needed to closely reflect the original software to minimise required user training. Akita, therefore, developed an incident management Power App that met these requirements.
Closely reflecting the original software, the Power App solution allows users to quickly log incidents and keep track of actions being undertaken.
There are several additional benefits to the Power Apps solution over the original incident management software. The Power App is built on Common Data Service (CDS), which is the backbone of Microsoft’s cloud architecture. This gives the new incident management Power App a much longer lease of life compared to most software, as CDS is unlikely to become obsolete for some years. It also means that log data can be used with other Microsoft solutions such as Power BI to effectively monitor trends and improve response (basic reporting is currently being used).
The Power App solution has an improved user interface, making it simpler to use. As it's powered by cloud technology, the incident management Power App can also be accessed on the go if required.
Importantly, the incident management Power App remains customisable. While the project timeline required that it match the original software, there remains plenty of scope for streamlining processes further and even adding new features as required.
