Getting a better understanding of risks in the workplace with data visualisation.
Akita worked with a large organisation to improve health and safety, implementing an HSE incident report in Power BI.
As required by law, any UK organisation with more than 10 staff members is required to keep records of accidents or illness. While some organisations bemoan this requirement, others can find value from this data in terms of improving their operations and demonstrating diligence.
A large organisation approached Akita to help it do more to understand its internal HSE. While meeting all legal requirements on reporting and training, management felt that the HSE logs didn’t present the whole picture and that more could be done to help understand and reduce incidents.
HSE Data Visualisation
Microsoft Power BI is a useful data visualisation tool. It can be used to transform data sets into graphs, visuals and tables. These in turn make it easier to identify trends and patterns than viewing data on a spreadsheet.
Given its capabilities, Power BI was the ideal solution for the organisation’s requirements. Using data from HSE logs, an HSE incident report was created within Power BI and made available for senior management to view.
The Power BI HSE incident report reinterpreted data to provide more useful findings than the legally-required forms. Information such as the number of incidents, the times they took place, the type of incidents and the locations where incidents took place all featured as visuals within the report. And each visual presented its own important trend about the nature of incidents within the organisation.
Reduced Risk With Power BI HSE Incident Report
By transforming existing data (normally resigned to paper forms) into more compelling and understandable visuals, the Power BI HSE incident report had near-immediate benefits. Management was quickly able to identify risk areas that had previously not been considered. As a result, staff training has now been tailored to help identify and prevent these types of risks.
Using the new HSE incident report, management has been able to reduce accidents in the workplace while demonstrating a proactive safety approach within the organisation. This in turn has kept both staff and board members happy.
