Microsoft Power Automate Desktop has been designed to increase productivity by automating repetitive tasks and is now available free.
Power Automate (once known as Flow) has become an integral part of many Dynamics 365, SharePoint, outlook and Teams projects for the useful way it can take inputs and trigger actions across a wide range of applications. Recognising this, Microsoft has now made Power Automate Desktop free for users of Windows 10.
What does Power Automate do?
As described, Power Automate links applications, allowing actions or activities in one to trigger workflows and actions in another (eg. an email received triggers an action elsewhere). By automating even small tasks in this way, time consuming manual jobs can be eliminated, generating substantial efficiency gains over time.
Tasks are automated using low-code RPA, which means no coding required. RPA records your actions across your desktop, including clicks of the mouse and the use of your keyboard to automate workflows. Once the automation of your clicks has been recorded by the RPA, you're able to replay the automation, preventing you from wasting time.
What are the benefits of Power Automate Desktop?
Works across various platforms
The RPA technology records your actions across multiple platforms, meaning that you can automate your actions on Excel, Outlook, SharePoint and a host of other Microsoft applications. Power Automate Desktop can also link hundreds of third-party applications as well.
The lack of coding required means that it is accessible and user-friendly, no matter how technologically experienced you are. Simple to install, it is extremely accessible and easy to explore. Then once you’ve got a flavour for its capabilities, talk to an expert to see where you can make some real efficiency gains.
By reducing the number and time spent on repetitive tasks, Power Automate Desktop increases staff productivity, in turn boosting profits
Works across businesses and larger organisations
Automation processes can be built across businesses and organisations with more than 400 connectors available in the cloud. This means that data is more easily accessed and shared.
What are the limitations of the free version of Power Automate Desktop?
The version of Power Automate Desktop for Windows 10 is very limited in its ability to integrate with other platforms and apps.
The Windows 10 version also does not allow completely automated and unattended desktop flows, meaning there is still manual effort required for them to be completed (such as a button click).
The free version's functionalities are also restricted to the local computer that it is installed on.
